More Than Just Custom Frame Builders…

Stevenson Custom Bicycle Proprietors, Bill and Shawn Stevenson

Most of you probably think of us as custom frame builders. That will always be an element at the heart of our business, but it’s not the essence of what we do. The essence of what we do is strive to help you optimize your cycling experience. We want you to ride further, farther, faster- easier. We want you to have more fun doing it. We want your bikes to be the best tools possible for the kind of riding you do on them. We want to take into account your needs and circumstances, listen to what you want in your cycling experience, and help you achieve it in the best way possible. In short, we want to take a holistic approach to helping you attain your cycling dreams. Between the two of us we have over seventy-years of experience in the world of cycling we would love to put to work to help you do just that.

This means we have a lot to offer you even if you never even give a thought to purchasing a custom frame from us.

Here’s a sampling of some of the other things we may be able to do for you-

Comfortable and Efficient Bike Fit

We will use precision tools to confirm critical measurements.

We believe than anyone who is going to spend time on a bike should start out with a proper bike fitting. Over the past two decades we’ve developed a precision bike fitting system. We aim to use this system to do two things. We want you to be as comfortable as possible on the bike and we want you to be as efficient as possible. Our approach isn’t to try to fit everyone into a predefined box. We take the time to listen to what you want and need. Then we develop a fitting that meets those goals. Whether you are a weekday commuter, a tourist, a club rider, a racer, or an ultra-distance endurance rider; you will be the better for taking the time to get a good bike fit.

The basic fitting is $50.00. Contact us at stevensoncustombikes@gmail.com or (360) 402-2234 to schedule a fitting now.

Repair and Service

We have a fully stocked repair shop with many specialized tools.

We run a full service bicycle repair shop. We can offer a few things you won’t be able to get at other shops in the area- an unparalleled level of experience and expertise, many specialized tools you won’t see at other local shops, and free pickup and delivery.

Parts and Accessories

Groups Available From Campagnolo, Shimano, and SRAM

We have set up accounts with many of the major parts distributors. This allows us to order parts as needed for repairs and bike builds. It also means if you need lighting, a derailleur, new fenders, or just about anything else for you bike, we can probably help you out quickly and at a good price. Combine this with our pickup and delivery service and you can have all the convenience of online purchasing, except the part is going to come to your doorstep already installed on the bike.

Restoration, Frame Repair, Refinishing, and Upgrades

Many of us have great old bikes that have seen better days. They may be classics or they may be trusty workhorses that have always done what we needed them to. You don’t need to run out and buy a new bike just because your old friend is getting worn around the edges. Your old bike can be a new bike once again- with a little ‘body and fender work,’ a fresh powder coat, and some new componentry. We are uniquely set up to do this. Even if your old steel frame is literally in two pieces, we can restore it to all of its former glory.

It’s not necessary to go the full restoration route either. Some strategically selected new (or vintage) componentry can often create a whole new riding experience. We are happy to point you at a few upgrades that will make a big difference or start with your frame and build you a whole new bike from the ground up.

Wheel Building

We are firm believers that one of the best places to upgrade your bike is with a quality hand built wheelset. Hand built wheels have better ride quality, better durability, can be as light or lighter than factory built wheels, and tend to be a better value. Bill has been building wheels for over forty years. He has built hundreds of wheels and is a true master wheel builder. Tied-and-soldered wheels are a particular specialty.

Frames and Complete Bikes From Gunnar

Gunnar Road Frame

We understand that the cost of a custom Stevenson lugged or fillet brazed frame is simply beyond many of our customer’s means.  With this in mind we have become dealers for Gunnar/Waterford.  This allows us to offer you complete bicycles for under $3000- about the cost of our basic lugged frame and fork.  Gunnar frames are manufactured in the United States by the Schwinn family to the highest production standards.  We are honored to be able to make these fine frames available to you at a reasonable price, starting around $1100 for frame and fork.

Back In the Sizing Business

Some of you are probably aware that we have been out of the sizing business for a while. When Alpine Experience bought The Bike Stand we sold them our sizing bike based on their preference to have bike fittings go through the shop.  When we left the shop the sizing bike stayed with them.

However, we strongly believe that you need an adjustable sizing bike to be able to do a credible bike fitting.  With that in mind we have fabricated the new size cycle you see above.  It is off to the finisher for a powder coat.  As soon as we get it back we will be offering a variety of fitting services once again.  Stay tuned for more details soon.

New Stem Prototype

Many of you may know that Shawn and I have been making custom handlebar stems for a long time and in fact designed and had made a job specific fixture to make stems with several years ago.  However, until recently there were some fit and finish issues that I was not satisfied with.  The issues were twofold, the first was that the binders we were using came pre-slotted. This was a time saver on seat tubes, where the slot width seemed appropriate, but the slot was too wide for a stem.  The solutions was to find unslotted binders, which a request to one of our suppliers eventually accomplished.  The second issue was that the piece of tubing that clamped to the handlebar looked like…well, a piece of tubing- no shape.  Another supplier, Paragon Machine Works, provided the solution with a machined sleeve which tapers from an outer diameter of 31.75mm in the center to just over 27mm at the edges.  Take a look at the pictures of prototype using the new pieces.  I think you’ll appreciate the shaped clamping piece and the nice tight clamping slots.  And oh by the way, Paragon also bores the inner diameter to exactly 26.0 for a perfect fit with the handlebars.

What’s New!

Many of you may have heard that changes are afoot at Stevenson Custom Bicycles.  Foremost, Bill Stevenson is no longer working part time at The Bike Stand and will be devoting all of his efforts to Stevenson.  Both of us are eager to grow our bike business and remain an integral part of the Olympia area cycling community.  With this in mind, we have made some changes to the services we offer that we are pleased to make you all aware of:

Frame Building- Building custom frames continues to be the core of our business.  We strongly believe that we build as nice a lugged or fillet brazed steel frame as any other builders in the world.  With both of us able to work fulltime, our delivery time is under three months from the time we take the deposit on the frame.  Some examples of our more recent work are available at-

http://stevensoncustombikes.com/gallery/

Complete Bicycles- In addition to building frames we also offer complete bikes.  We can turn your frame into a full bike, whether you fancy Campagnolo, Shimano, or SRAM.  Parts and accessories from most manufacturers are available.  We are also exploring the possibility of offering a line of less expensive bicycles from another manufacturer, so if your budget doesn’t support a custom Stevenson, we may have other options for you in the future.

Sizings- We continue to offer a precision bike fitting service.  We can fit you for a new bike or optimize the fit on your existing bike for better comfort and efficiency.

Restoration- There are many fine vintage bicycles sitting in people’s garages.  These bikes can be restored to showpieces that are a joy to ride much like a great classic car.  This has become an increasing part of our business and we are pleased to be doing more restoration work.

Modification- Got a great steel road bike you want to be able to run bigger tires on? Want rack mounts or fittings for another water bottle?  Want to switch to a braking system that uses different mounting from what your bike came with?  We can perform these and many other frame modifications.

Refinishing- We are happy to partner with Forever Powder Coating to assist you getting your frame refinished.  In addition to doing great powder coating, the guys at Forever are masters at pin striping, box striping, and many other detailing options.

Upgrades and Modernization- Is that great bike you love to ride still running eight-speed with down tube shifters even though you’d really prefer new ergo or STI?  We can help you upgrade your bike to a modern 10 or 11-speed setup.  Other upgrades like lighter wheels, better brakes, tires, fenders, lighting, cargo carrying equipment, and more are also possible.

Wheelbuilding- Bill is one of the best wheelbuilders around. A wheel set with better quality hubs, lighter rims, and tied-and-soldered spoke connections can save weight AND increase durability.  We take pride in our custom wheels and hope to make this a much larger part of our business.

Service- One of the biggest changes we are making is to offer comprehensive repair service.  Bill is the most experienced bike mechanic in town.  We want to put his skills at your service, whether you need a derailleur adjustment or a complete overhaul.  The sweetener? We will pick your bike up at your home and deliver it back when the work is completed—free of charge on repair jobs over $50.00!

If any of these services are of interest to you, we can be reached by email at stevensoncustombikes@gmail.com or by phone at (360)402-2234.  Drop-ins are also welcome.  Just give us a call first to make sure one of us will be at the shop.

Please feel free to help us out by sharing this post.

Changes at Stevenson

Some of you may already have heard that Bill Stevenson was laid off from The Bike Stand last Friday. This was a sad event for us. Bill was the first employee of shop in 1971. He spent thirty years of his life working there. That said, it came as little surprise, given that the shop has been struggling and the parent business has shrunken over the past few years from 55 employees to six today.

Leaving the shop is a blow after such a long association, but it also marks an opportunity. Over the last year we have been working to grow our own business, Stevenson Custom Bicycles. Our focus is and will remain building custom bikes and doing frame repairs and restorations. However, there are many other areas where we would like to and are able to do business, but have chosen not to in order to avoid a conflict of interest with Bill’s work at The Bike Stand.

Starting today we are expanding our operation to include bicycle repairs, wheelbuilding, and parts and accessories sales. We have accounts with all of the major suppliers and can quickly and efficiently order whatever you might need to meet you cycling needs. We will also be offering a pickup and delivery service for repairs.

If you would like to place an order, schedule a repair, or have any questions we can be reached by phone at (360) 402-2234 or by email at stevensoncustombikes@gmail.com.

Keep an eye out here and on our web site at stevensoncustombikes.com.
Thanks for your support.
